Chemical-based disinfectants causing adverse health effects.
For most people, the quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) in cleaning and disinfectant products cause no problems. However, exposure to QACs does have the potential to cause serious health effects. In recent years, there has been a rise in publications linking asthma to the use of cleaning products. One particular ingredient that has received more attention recently as a cause of asthma is quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides (BACs) are one type of QACs that has been implicated in causing adverse health effects.
These may include:
contact dermatitis
triggering of asthma symptoms in people who already have asthma or new onset of asthma in people with no prior asthma
eye and mucous membrane injuries from splashes or contact with mists
oral and gastrointestinal injuries from swallowing solutions containing QACs
The role of QACs in many other disorders such as cancers, reproductive problems, and endocrine changes has not been adequately studied, so guidance specific to those disorders cannot be provided.
